Free The Children Community and Granada – Estimated 6 Service Hours
Meaningful. Sustainable. Unforgettable
Dive into Central America where you’ll explore the culture and land of Nicaragua. From the capital of Managua to the historic center of Granada, you’ll experience the vibrant heritage as you explore local markets, coffee plantations, traditional art, and more. As you’re immersed in local culture and connect with nearby communities, you’ll gain insight into the challenges they face—from natural disasters to political unrest—and work together with Free The Children to build long-term solutions through a series of small service projects.
YOUR SERVICE PROJECT THEMES
We work with the award-winning charity Free The Children to better understand the needs of each community and then focus projects on those issues. Themes include:
  • Education
  • Health
  • Clean Water and Sanitation
  • Alternative Income and Livelihood
  • Agriculture and Food Security

Day 1: Arrive in Managua
Meet your Field Director at the airport and travel to your accommodations.

Days 2-4: Service Project — Free the Children
As communities evolve, so do their needs. We’ll work closely with Free The Children and community members to understand local challenges. Since projects are determined closer to your actual tour date, here’s a glimpse at what a typical day might look like.
  • Each morning, you’ll begin your service project in a nearby village.
  • Spend afternoons immersed in cultural activities.
  • Evenings are a chance to reflect, discuss events as a group, and draw connections between the day’s work and relevant global issues.

Day 5: Granada
Travel to Granada for a guided sightseeing tour of this 16th-century city. Local markets, Moorish and Andalusian architecture, colorful buildings and ocean-views abound.
  • Enjoy breakfast at the unique non-profit Café de las Sonrisas, which is staffed by solely hearing impaired individuals. You’ll also get to view the weaving they do.

Day 6: Granada
  • Take a guided hiking tour of Masaya Volcano and enjoy panoramic views of Lake Nicaragua and the City of Granada.

Day 7: Granada
  • Zip-line through Nicaragua's lush rain forest.
  • Enjoy a guided boat tour of Las Isletas.

Day 8: Depart for home
